Clean and Healthy Waters Campaign

From Puget Sound to the Columbia River, toxic chemicals are destroying fragile ecosystems. The goal of the Clean and Healthy Waters Campaign is to make sure chemicals harmful to our environment aren't used in consumer products or in manufacturing so that future generations can enjoy the benefits of a healthy and thriving environment.

We're All In the Same Boat

Many of the toxic chemicals polluting Washington's waters and wildlife come from the same sources as the chemicals found in humans: consumer products used in our homes, in our cars, and on our bodies everyday. Yet, thanks to weak state and federal chemical laws, many of the chemicals we know are harmful are still allowed to be put in items we use everyday.

The goal of the Clean and Healthy Waters Campaign is to make sure chemicals harmful to our environment aren't used in consumer products or in manufacturing so that future generations can enjoy the benefits of a healthy and thriving environment.

The Solution

Without action to prevent further contamination of Washington's waterways and wildlife, we will keep running on the toxic treadmill of spending millions of taxpayer dollars on cleanup, while at the same time repolluting with chemicals found in everyday products. Eventually, time will run out. Several steps are needed to get off this toxic treadmill:

  • Only the safest chemicals should be used in products and manufacturing. Washington state should eliminate the use of the most hazardous chemicals. At the federal level, Congress should update the Toxic Substances Control Act to ensure the most harmful chemicals aren't used in the marketplace.

  • Washington should help industry switch to safer alternatives and away from chemicals known to be harmful to wildlife. Washington needs to help businesses identify greener solutions by providing technical support.
