Deceptive Bromine Industry Flyer

Mailed to Washington Residents

In a last ditch effort to defeat our legislation to eliminate toxic flame retardants, called PBDEs, manufacturers of these chemicals sent the deceptive flyer pictured below to thousands of residents across the state. If you recieved this flyer please contact Jim Dawson

Please see our description about how the flyer is misleading and deceptive below.

Some of the specific distortions in this flyer are:

  • A leading quote in the flyer on the flammability of upholstered furniture is from John Dean, Maine’s State Fire Marshal, but in fact Dean does support a ban of PBDEs in Maine.

  • The mailer says that there is a “lack of scientific evidence demonstrating that this product poses a risk to human health or the environment.” This is flat out not true. The WA Departments of Ecology and Health have extensively studied this issue and concluded that PBDEs, including the deca form, are toxic and should be banned as long as safer alternatives are available.

  • The mailer says we have to choose between fire safety and protecting our children from toxic industrial chemicals. This just isn't true. The PBDE bill has many safeguards in place to make sure fire safety is maintained. The bill will create a fire safety committee made up of the Fire Chiefs, Firefighters, Fire Commissioners, and the Fire Marshal of the State of Washington to ensure that safer alternatives to PBDEs meet ALL applicable fire safety standards. Which is why the Washington Fire Chiefs, Fire Marshall, and Firefighter Associations all support the bill.

Please help us spread the truth about toxic flame retardants and fire safety by telling the real story about the PBDE bill to your friends and neighbors.
