OLYMPIA -- On the outside a bright red plastic Slinky and a happy yellow penguin look like a child's delight.

But zap them with an X-ray fluorescence analyzer and a scarier picture emerges.

All too often traces of lead, polyvinyl chloride and other toxic elements appear on the readout.
