Dear John Williams, Washington State Department of Ecology:
We are concerned about the health and well being of the younger members of our community.
On October 30 2012, the Washington Toxics Coalition released a new report, Something Smells: What Tween Perfume Makers Should Tell You, But Don’t, in which they uncovered that big name companies like Disney, American Eagle, and Claire’s, are not complying with rules issued under the Children’s Safe Product Act requiring them to report the presence of phthalates in their products Phthalates are hormone-disrupting chemicals that affect reproductive development and are linked to asthma and obesity.
This is unacceptable. These companies need to comply with the law and tell us what’s in their products. We urge the Department take enforcement action on companies not complying with Washington state law.
Products used by children should not contain harmful chemicals, like the hormone-disrupting phthalates. We urge the Department take enforcement action on companies not complying with Washington state law.
Thank you,
