Thank Rep. Inslee for Strengthening the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act
Thanks to your encouragement, Representative Jay Inslee strengthened the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act (H.R. 5820) -- the bill to update our decades old chemical safety law. It now includes key health protections that will protect people, especially children, from the worst of the worst chemicals like toxic flame retardants, lead, and cadmium.
Washington leaders deserve a big THANK YOU for standing up for the health of our families and the environment.
Ok, maybe it's a little too soon to declare that the worst toxic chemicals are out of consumer products forever. But, last week Congress took one small step in the right direction that has us excited!
This is exactly what you asked him to do when you signed the petition that was delivered to his office.
It's not every day we get to thank our leaders for doing the right thing. So please join us in thanking Rep. Inslee for his commonsense stance on the worst toxic chemicals by signing the thank you letter here: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5121/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=3803
For 33 years, the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) has stayed the same. But the science and what we know about how chemicals can cause harm has changed dramatically. This has landed us in a risky situation. Without updating TSCA, we can't prevent our families from everyday exposure to toxic chemicals like cadmium in Shrek glasses and BPA in cash register receipts. The introduction of the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act* is a big deal. This is our once-in-a-generation opportunity to pass legislation that would fix our nation's broken chemical safety laws.
We are thrilled to have strong legislation introduced to kick off the conversation in Washington D.C. However, we know that this will be a long hard battle as the bill rides the ups and downs though each committee and iteration on its journey to become law. The chemical industry is up to their old tricks, but we know with your help we can continue to win commonsense protections from toxic chemicals for both our families and the environment.
We will continue to keep you updated on the progress of the bill and let you know when opportunities arise to make your voice count through our email alerts, ToxicsWAtch blog, Facebook page, and Twitter.

*If you have been following federal legislation to update the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) and thought this bill had already been introduced, you are not alone. The legislation we talked about in previous alerts was actually a discussion draft. Last Thursday the discussion draft was officially introduced as H.R. 5820.
