A Nurse On A Mission

When Karen Bowman became a nurse she didn’t expect that years later she would be lobbying elected officials on the need for better laws on toxic chemicals that cause cancer, reproductive problems, and learning disabilities. But now she couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Because of her health training and experience, she has realized she’s in a unique position to see and understand the impacts harmful chemicals have on our bodies. And, as a nurse, her primary responsibility is to care for her patients. So it just made sense that she should be helping to prevent diseases by advocating for laws that will protect people from harmful chemicals.

She loves what she does so much that she’s teaching other nurses and doctors how to join her in speaking out against chemicals and for better protections.  On September 13th along with Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, she spoke  to health professionals about becoming better advocates and the need for them to get involved by volunteering, becoming a postcard captain, or mentoring other health professionals interested in environmental health issues.

To hear her eloquent call to action, check out these great videos of speaker Karen Bowman, MN, RN, COHN-S, Environmental Health Specialist, Washington State Nurses Association.

After the training, we asked Karen a few questions about how she got involved with environmental health advocacy and why other health professionals should as well.
