Safer Chemicals Coming Soon? VIDEO

Could toxic toys, toxic shower curtains, toxic food containers, and all other toxic household items soon be a thing of the past?  We have a new reason to hope the answer to this question is a resounding YES!  That's because a new bill was introduced in Congress yesterday that will help prevent harmful chemicals from invading our homes, bodies, and environment, and make us all healthier.

The federal Safe Chemicals Act of 2011, introduced by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, will fill the gap in the nation’s chemical safety laws that currently allow harmful chemicals into our homes via the products we use everyday. Passage of the act would mean that when consumers go to the store, they would have the confidence that the shampoo, rug, or baby bottle they were buying was safe to use. And best of all, they won't be exposing their family to chemicals linked to cancer, learning disabilities, and infertility.

There's no word yet on where Washington state's two Senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, stand on the bill. We're hoping they sign on in support soon.

Senator Lautenberg made the announcement yesterday via You Tube, which we think is really cool. The video features Washington state resident Molly Gray, who was a participant in our recent study of chemicals in pregnant women and whose Congressional testimony helped spur the introduction of the bill.

Stay tuned to this blog to follow all of the latest exciting developments on the Safe Chemicals Act, or if you are so inclined sign up for our emails and get breaking news on the bill and information how you can help make sure it becomes law.

For more information on the bill introduction, our press release is available here.
