Because it’s the end point for rivers and streams in the region, Puget Sound ends up being a dumping ground for all chemicals and substances that collect in stormwater for hundreds of miles. Here at Washington Toxics Coalition, we’ve done studies such as Puget Sound: Down the Drain which documented a possible link between household wash water and phthalate pollution in the Sound.
That’s far from the only type of pollution threatening wildlife, however- there’s also oil and gas runoff from cars, pesticides from gardens, and hazardous items that are thrown in the trash. With so many things we use every day possibly contributing to the pollution problem, we compiled a list of tips anyone can use to help lessen their impact on Puget Sound.
