Emergency Emails Needed to Senate!

— filed under: Parents and Kids, Toxic-Free Kids Campaign, Activists, 2011 Legislative Session, Children Safe Products Bill of 2011, Environmental health, Toxic Toys

As you read this the chemical and toy industries are fighting tooth and nail to block legislation that would help prevent diseases like childhood cancer. Just last week they killed a House bill, championed by health advocates, that would help protect kids from cancer causing chemicals like cadmium, Teflon chemicals and formaldehyde that are still used in products kids use every day.

Emergency Emails Needed to Senate!

We continue to face an uphill battle to protect children’s health.

  • Cancer causing chemicals still a problem in children’s products[i]?  Check.
  • Childhood cancer rates still increasing[ii]? Check.
  • Industry lobbyists still getting paid big bucks to drown out the voices of concerned parents and health professionals? Check. Check. Check

Our only chance of moving forward this year is to rally around the Senate bill. We can still win protections for Washington’s children, but not if we stay silent.

You can help right now by contacting your state Senator and asking them to support the Children’s Safe Products Bill. Click here to send an email today.

The chemical industry is ruthless.  Last year they successfully killed the federal bill that would have protected American families and workers from toxic chemicals in our homes and on the job. Now, they are even more intent to stamp out reform in Washington and other states. We are on the front lines here in Washington.

That is why it is so important to act now. We only have two weeks. Please contact your Senator to make sure the bill passes before we run out of time. You can also help by forwarding this email to everyone you know. We need to demonstrate that there is overwhelming support to make protecting kids from cancer causing chemicals a top priority.

It’s been a rough session so far.  You have heard all about the looming budget cuts and every legislator is facing tough decisions. Thankfully, voting to support the Children’s Safe Products Bill (SB 5231) is an easy decision. This bill would put in place common-sense protections for Washington’s most vulnerable population. Plus it’s budget neutral, which means legislators can say YES to protecting kids health without having to say no to something else.

Click here to send an email and let your Senator know about that you support win-win legislation to protect kid’s health.

P.S. If you would rather give your Senator a call you can look up their information here: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/

[i] 48% of toys tested in 2010 by healthystuff.org had cadmium levels greater then 40 ppm.

[ii] Invasive cancer in children increased from 11.5 cases per 100,000 children in 1975 to 14.8 per 100,000 children in 2004 according to the National Cancer Institute: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Sites-Types/childhood
