Full Steam Ahead On Toxic Toy Rules
Parents will still be able to find out whether their kids’ toys contain cancer-causing and other chemicals despite a move by Governor Gregoire yesterday to delay any new state requirements on business for one year.
Parents will still be able to find out whether their kids’ toys contain cancer-causing and other chemicals even after Governor Gregoire yesterday delayed any new state requirements on business for one year. The Governor's office and the Department of Ecology clarified yesterday that the rules would continue to move forward because they are necessary to carryout state law and are critical to protecting public health.
Last month, the Department of Ecology issued draft rules to require toy makers to report whether their products contain any of 59 harmful chemicals. The rules would be the first-ever time toy makers have to disclose toxic chemicals in their products.
A public comment period will run through the end of the year and a public hearing is scheduled for December 9th at Ecology Headquarters in Olympia.
Thanks to Governor Gregoire and Ecology Director Ted Sturdevant for keeping Washington on the path to safe and healthy toys. Full steam ahead!
